Marine Biology
Microscopic life undersea in the Qatar Marine Zone (QMZ) is incredibly diverse and it has various types of marine animals. A wealth of sea grasses, plants and algae (red, green, brown), seaweeds, sponges, corals, polychaetes, arthropods, mollusks, echinoderms and numerous fish species can be found in QMZ.
The marine biology laboratory covers studies of many aspects. These include marine animals in sediments from QMZ as well as samples from neighboring countries. Organisms are classified to the species level by trained staff and samples are kept as a reference material. Studies also include detection of bacteria in seawater samples.
Samples are documented by photography in collaboration with the Scientific Photography lab at the ESC. Selected Museum Specimens are preserved for display.
